Cultural Awarness (About Tense)

Cultural Awarness

Belajar Daring - Cultural Awarness (About Tense), is one of the learning materials in English subjects.

On this occasion the Admin will share English material with the title or theme Cultural Awarness (About Tense), please read it carefully...

The English tense system is always complicated to learn because it has different forms of verbs depending on the time of action.

In English, tense and aspect are two things which are intertwined.

  • Tense refers to the time of an event-it could be : present, past, future.
  • Aspect refers to the state of the event-the event could be :
    • in progress (progressive or continuous aspect), or
    • complicated (perfect aspect).

There are many patterns of English tense, but that is not the most difficult part learning the English tense system because the pattern of the English tenses can be memorised easily.

The most difficult problem for Indonesia learners is to choose a suitable tense to describe a certain action.

Patricia Wilcox Peterson suggest four things to overcome the problem of studying the past perfect, present perfect, and future perfect tense.

The Past Perfect Tense

We use the past perfect tense to refer to a situation in the past that came before another situatuin in the past.

The pattern is S + had + past participle

Example:

  • We had gone to Bali when he cam.
  • Gisele had visited him and saw what happen.

The Future Continuous Tense

The future perfect progressive tense is used to talk about an action that will already have started and will be happening by a certain time in the future.

We use time expression such as for 30 minutes and since early morning to describe the length of time the activity has already gone.

To form a sentence in the future perfect progressive will + have + been + present participle.

Example:

  • Will you have been teaching for more than 35 years by the time your retire?
  • On Sunday, the students will be going to the museum.
  • Brother will have been working for hours by the time my cousin comes.

The Present Perfect Tense

We use present perfect to refer to an action happening from the past up to the present.

The pattern is S + have/ has + past participle

Example:

  • We have studied chemistry since 8 o’clock in the morning.
  • She has driving for two days.
  • I have been here for three days.

The Future Perfect Tense

We use the future perfect tense to describe an activity completed before another activity in the future, the first activity in the future perfect and the second one is in the present tense.

The tense use “when, before, by the time” in order to mark time.

The patters is S + will + have + past participle

Example:

  • I won’t have finished this video project by the end of June.
  • Will you have finished your English project by the next week?
  • I will have done my homework by the end of this day.
